We have designed IP-RACINE around a series of RTD&I activities that cover selected key areas within each link of the chain of Digital Cinema, production, postproduction and exhibition, with the aim of maximising the impact of limited RTD resources.
In the progression from the current situation (where digital is a small part of the chain) to a full Digital Cinema, we expect a significant change in the way Cinema is made. IP-RACINE’s activity on Improved Workflow Methodologies is key throughout the project introducing new integrated methods of work that improve efficiency, build on the emerging standards and facilitate a seamless flow of data, across multiple platforms and media. The workflow is closely related to the activity User Requirements for Digital Cinema as a guide for the project.

The Workflow and User Requirements underpin the principal RTD Activities that address the different stages of the chain. Filmless Capture systems is the RTD&I activity at the beginning of the chain, designed to improve the digital acquisition or ‘filmless camera’ technologies, and integrating their output more closely into the workflow. We also address the real-time generation of synthetic content and its integration with live action in the Virtual Film Studio , exploring future production techniques. At the postproduction stage, we focus on Representation and Change of Moving Imagery , with research into new methods of representing scenes, based on higher-level descriptions of objects or vision architectures that open up new creative potential and offer more efficient ways of storing, searching, indexing, transmitting and re-purposing data.
Improved Exhibition Systems will facilitate the creation of high quality ‘cinema’ experiences, both at lower cost and at a higher ‘realism’ than before, covering the development and display of 3-D electronic cinema material, and the demonstration of seamless integration of live and recorded material for the big screen. It is necessary to develop technology that will improve the quality and reduce the cost of movie making if Digital Cinema is to win over the ‘big battalions’ of Hollywood, as well as supporting the creativity of the smaller budget European industry and making it easier for new players to enter the movie business.
In the end, the success of Digital Cinema will depend on improving the Quality of Experience of the users and IP-RACINE will rigorously evaluate the potential of the research results. The preceding activities lead to an integrated Route to Exploitation, which draws on the expertise of Europe’s leading manufacturers and film studio to prepare the market and contribute to the vital Standards Representation. All partners will take part in the complementary Dissemination of Knowledge. All these technical activities are integrated through an RTD&I Activities Workpackage Management.
The RTD&I work is complemented by downstream efforts both to push the results towards the market and to improve the skills base for future experts in Digital Cinema. The Demonstration of the effectiveness of the results of the RTD in actual industrial environments will be provided by a series of Testbeds for Experimental Production, Postproduction, and Exhibition/Display. As with the Research, Technical Development and Innovation (RTDI) Activities, the Demonstration tasks are co-ordinated by Demonstration Activities Workpackage Management.
IP-RACINE’s Training activities include, at one level, the strictly research oriented ones, in a Researcher exchange programme and Doctoral student ‘fair’ to promote the challenging research topics related to Digital Cinema; while we need to face the recycling of professionals able to be confident with new workflow and new components which we intend to develop through Syllabus development and a Film professional training programme. The Training activities are co-ordinated by Training Workpackage Activities Management.
The Consortium Management activities include Partnership management (6.4.1) which promotes the research excellence and integration of the activities together with the Activity Planning and Reporting (6.4.3) and looks after a unified view of the project while taking into account the diverse (even competing) objectives of the industrial partners and Financial management (6.4.2), with attention to Gender Mainstreaming and Ethics throughout the project.
